Abstract

Romans 16:7 mentions the name Iounian (in the accusative case). The debate over the grammatical gender of this name has involved philological, patristic, historical, and especially text-critical factors. On this last point, the American textual critic, Eldon J. Epp, has suggested that scholarly research and the editorial production of critical editions of the Greek New Testament has been strongly influenced by sociocultural biases. This paper sets out to test this hypothesis by investigating how critical editions of the Greek New Testament have rendered the name and gender of Iounian from the appearance of the first edition in 1516 to the present day.
