Gethsemane: Revelation of Humanity

A Synoptic Approach

Abstract

The story of the garden of Gethsemane highlights the drama of the cross and Jesus' attitude towards it. However, each of the Synoptic Evangelists describes it in its own way. There are obvious dependencies and notable differences. In the understanding of each Evangelist, Jesus is truly human, but the traits that characterize that humanity are different.
In the present article we have recourse to the synoptic approach to highlight the particularity and originality of each Synoptic Evangelist in presenting the prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Olives, a true prologue to the narrative of the passion.
